A man has been charged as part of an investigation into a collision in Stepney Green which has now claimed the life of a 51-year-old cyclist. Police were called to Aylward Street, Stepney Green, at around 11.15pm on Thursday (6 August) following reports of a collision involving a car and a cyclist. The cyclist was seriously injured and taken to hospital for treatment. He died from his injuries on Sunday (9 August) and has now been named by police as 51-year-old Chris Powell. His next of kin are being supported by specialist officers.
Man charged with attempted murder
Parvez Ahmed Rahman, 33, of Russia Lane, Bethnal Green, was charged on Friday (7 August) with attempted murder and failing to stop after a road collision. Rahman appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (8 August), where he was remanded in custody. He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on Friday, 4 September. The Metropolitan Police investigation remains ongoing following Mr Powell’s death.
Police appeal for CCTV and dashcam footage
Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts remain with Christopher’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time. “As we try to build up a full picture of the incident, we are appealing to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any relevant information – particularly anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage.” Anyone with information or footage which could assist detectives is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CAD 8767/06AUG26.
