An investigation is under way following the death of a person at a block of flats in Southampton, where police and forensic specialists have remained for much of Sunday. Emergency services descended on Weston Lane in Weston during the early hours of Sunday, August 9, with witnesses reporting the first police activity at around 4.30am.
Several police vehicles and ambulances attended the block of flats opposite Domino’s Pizza, before officers established a cordon around the property. A source has told UKNIP that a person has died following the incident.
A private ambulance is understood to have attended the scene later on Sunday to remove the deceased. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has yet to publicly confirm details surrounding the death, including the identity of the person or how they died.
Person reportedly seen in handcuffs
One witness said they saw around seven police vehicles at approximately 4.30am and reported seeing a person in handcuffs.
The witness also described seeing a police officer running to a vehicle to retrieve a first aid kit. Another resident reported seeing a substantial ambulance and police presence at around 6am, with a person apparently being treated inside an ambulance.
It has not been confirmed whether anybody has been arrested, and there is currently no confirmation that the person reportedly seen in handcuffs is connected to the death.
Forensics remain at scene
Specialist forensic officers have been working at the property for several hours as the investigation continues. Investigators wearing protective clothing have been seen repeatedly entering and leaving the building, photographing the scene and handling unidentified items contained within evidence bags.
A forensic work area was also established outside the flats, where officers were seen examining items on a table. Uniformed police officers have continued to guard the scene while specialists carry out their examination. A significant cordon remains in place around the property, although Weston Lane itself has remained open to traffic.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear, and there has been no official indication at this stage that the death is being treated as suspicious. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has been approached for a statement. This is a developing story and will be updated when further information is released.
