Smoke from a major wildfire burning in South Wales has travelled across the Bristol Channel, leaving parts of Wiltshire under a grey haze and residents reporting a strong smell of burning. People in Warminster, Bradford on Avon, Mere and Frome reported smoky conditions on Monday morning (10 August), despite the source of the fire being many miles away. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is understood to have investigated reports of smoke, with residents reportedly being told that it was originating from the major wildfire near Llangynidr Reservoir in South Wales. The change in wind direction has carried the smoke south-eastwards, allowing the plume to travel a considerable distance from the fire.

Major wildfire still burning

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters had remained at the Llangynidr Reservoir fire throughout the weekend and were continuing efforts to contain its spread on Monday. Communities around Blaenavon, Brynmawr, Pontypool and Newport were also being affected by smoke following a change in wind direction. The fire service said: “This morning the moorland fire near the Llangynidr Reservoir is still ongoing and crews have been at the scene all weekend and have been containing the spread of the blaze.”

Firefighting helicopter returns

A specialist firefighting helicopter is returning to the incident on Monday to support crews tackling the fire from the ground. The aircraft is being used to reach areas of burning moorland which are difficult or unsafe for firefighters to access. Firefighters are also being supported by contractors and local farmers as efforts continue to bring the wildfire under control. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service warned that the operation is expected to continue for several more days, with resources being reviewed as weather and fire conditions change. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has been approached for further information regarding the smoke affecting Wiltshire.
