A major firefighting operation is under way in the New Forest after a vehicle fire on the A31 spread into the central reservation and surrounding heathland. Twenty-six fire engines and specialist resources are now tackling the blaze, which has forced the closure of the A31 and part of the M27 and sent a huge plume of smoke across Hampshire. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said its control room received more than 160 emergency calls after the fire broke out on the eastbound A31 at around 5.24pm on Sunday (9 August). The blaze initially involved a vehicle before flames spread into the central reservation and then into nearby heathland. The incident rapidly escalated, with crews from across Hampshire joined by firefighters from Dorset and Wiltshire. By Sunday evening, 26 fire engines, four water carriers, six off-road vehicles and multiple command vehicles had been deployed. 
Huge smoke plume visible for miles
The scale of the fire has produced a huge column of smoke visible across a significant part of the south coast. Witnesses reported seeing the plume from Southampton, Royal Victoria Country Park and even the Isle of Wight. One motorist returning from the airport described seeing a “big cloud of smoke” and said the heat from the blaze could be felt from inside their vehicle. Images from the area have shown motorists out of their vehicles as traffic came to a standstill. 
A31 and M27 affected by major closures
The A31 is closed through the New Forest between Picket Post and the M27, with motorists being diverted away from the scene. The M27 has also been affected around Junction 2 as emergency services continue their operation. Drivers are being warned to avoid the area and allow significant additional time for journeys. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: “The A31 is currently closed between Picket Post and Junction 2 of the M27 due to the vehicle fire. “Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes wherever possible. “Please follow diversion signs, allow extra time for your journey and avoid the area to allow emergency crews to work safely.” Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene as they work to contain the fire and prevent further spread across the heathland. There has been no confirmation at this stage of any casualties. The incident remains ongoing and further updates are expected.
