Teen Surfer Khai Cowley Dies in Shocking Shark Attack off Yorke Peninsula

Fifteen-year-old surfing prodigy Khai Cowley was tragically killed by a shark near Ethel Beach, South Australia, on Thursday afternoon. The talented teen, from Maslin Beach in Adelaide’s south, was enjoying the waves with family when a white pointer shark attacked.

Surfing Community Mourns Young Talent

Surfing South Australia expressed heartbreak: “We are shattered to learn that a young, talented, and dearly loved member of our surfing community was involved in this fatal attack. Please keep the family in your thoughts and respect their privacy during this devastating time.”

Tributes have poured in across social media. One friend posted, “Fly high… some of my most memorable surfs were with you.” Khai was also a proud member of the Microgroms Junior Surf Club, remembered as a “good friend and admired surfer.”

Local Community in Shock

Stansbury surfer Marty Goody described the tragedy as hitting close to home in their tight-knit community: “Everyone knows each other here. Khai was with his family at the time—this is heartbreaking.” Police confirmed they recovered Khai’s body and have launched an investigation, with a coroner’s report underway.

Ethel Beach, part of the Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park, is a popular spot for surfers and tourists alike. Marion Bay Ocean Safari operator Ryan Valente said, “It’s the stuff nightmares are made of. Residents can’t remember anything like this happening before.”

Fellow surfer Luke Sykora called the event “tragic and extremely rare,” emphasising no one should have to face such a horror.

Spike in South Australian Shark Attacks Raises Alarm

This fatal attack adds to a worrying rise in shark incidents in South Australian waters this year. Traditionally, shark problems have been most common in Western Australia and the eastern states, but recent events signal a troubling new trend locally.

A GoFundMe page set up by Khai’s aunt is now helping to cover funeral costs, honoring the life of a surfer taken far too soon.
