Romford Council Boss Stands Firm on Flag Display Row

Romford residents have raised eyebrows over the Union Flag and St George’s Cross flying outside the town hall. Now, council leader Ray Morgon has hit back, urging the community to show pride – but play by the rules.

Flags Flying Proudly in Romford

Both the Union Flag and St George’s Cross flutter outside Romford’s town hall all year round, signalling local patriotism. In a pointed letter to MP Andrew Rosindell, Cllr Morgon said: “We have no problem with residents showing their patriotism by flying flags at their homes or in the borough. It must be done safely and with respect.”

Safety First, Flags Second

But Morgon warns the council won’t tolerate flags causing hazards. If flags block road signs or create safety risks, they’ll be taken down without hesitation. “We do need to consider road and other users, and if they are in places that obscure signs or constitute a health and safety issue, then they will be removed,” he added.

His final word? “We will therefore leave our flags flying unless it causes a real problem.”
