Windrush Scandal: Furious Campaigners Fight Back Over Braverman Snub

Thousands of Black post-war immigrants who arrived on the MV Empire Windrush and other ships to rebuild Britain after WWII were slammed by a government scandal. The Windrush generation faced wrongful detentions, deportations, and devastating losses under harsh immigration rules.

Judicial Review Launched Over Braverman’s U-Turn

The Black Equity Organisation, championing civil rights for Black Britons, has launched a judicial review targeting Interior Minister Suella Braverman’s decision to reject three key recommendations from an independent Windrush inquiry. The group demands the Home Office be fully transparent and forced to honour its commitments.

“This government has yet to right the wrongs done, even after all this time. Legal action is our only option,” said campaigner Patrick Vernon, whose parents were part of the Windrush generation.

Ignored Promises Spark Outrage

  • Five years ago, the Windrush scandal broke, exposing how legitimate British citizens were unlawfully detained or deported.
  • Many lost jobs, homes, healthcare, and benefits; 26 victims died awaiting compensation.
  • The inquiry handed down 30 recommendations, fully accepted by Braverman’s predecessor.
  • Braverman rejected three: powers for the chief inspector of borders, a migrant commissioner, and formal reconciliation events.

Campaigners branded Braverman’s refusal a “slap in the face” to victims still awaiting justice.

Home Office Defends Itself

The Home Office hit back, claiming it is pursuing community engagement through other means instead of formal reconciliation events. It also insists it welcomes scrutiny and challenges via “more efficient” methods regarding the other two rejected recommendations.
