Ryanair Jet Scrapes Fence at Kalamata Airport – Minor Damage Only
A Ryanair Boeing 737 MAX 8-200 clipped a perimeter fence while taxiing at Kalamata International Airport in Greece, the airline confirmed. The winglet suffered minor damage, but no one was hurt.
Close Call as Flight FR6080 Rolls In
The incident happened shortly after Flight FR6080 landed safely. A Ryanair spokesperson said: “The wing tip came in contact with a fence” as the plane was taxiing to its stand.
No Injuries, Passengers Disembark Normally
The aircraft stopped under control, and passengers left the plane without any issues. Ryanair reassured travellers:
“The aircraft subsequently continued to stand, and passengers disembarked normally.”
Safety Checks Complete, Plane Back in Action
After the fence collision, the jet underwent standard safety inspections and maintenance. Ryanair confirmed it was cleared to fly again. Aviation officials are now reviewing the taxiway layout to see if signage or procedures need updating to avoid similar slips.
Taxiway Tight for New-Gen Jets
This near-miss highlights ongoing concerns over taxiway clearance at regional airports. The 737 MAX 8-200 features extended winglets for fuel efficiency that can be vulnerable during ground manoeuvres. Kalamata Airport, which handles both civilian and seasonal charters, has not yet commented on whether the fence encroached on safety zones.
