Woman Killed in Horrific A40 Pile-Up Amid Icy, Foggy Chaos
A woman has tragically died this morning in a devastating crash on the A40. Dangerous icy and foggy conditions sparked a series of major collisions between Witney and Burford Road, leaving the road closed both ways for hours.
Crash Causes Massive Road Closure
Thames Valley Police confirmed the fatality just before 10.30am, describing the incident as “very serious.” The A40 is shut between Witney and Burford as investigators comb the scene. The westbound carriageway could reopen later today, but eastbound remains closed.
Scene of Chaos: Multiple Vehicles Wrecked
Motorists at the scene told the wiltshire999.co.uk/where/oxford/" title="Oxford" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Oxford Mail about the “destruction” as cars collided one after another. Ben Starkey, a driver caught in the chaos, said:
“There were two cars crashed into each other, a vehicle crumpled beyond recognition, and a lady on the floor in serious condition. I saw about 10 smashed vehicles ahead and several more behind.”
He also witnessed emergency responders performing CPR on a woman. “It was terrible,” he added.
Multiple Injured, Emergency Services Respond
South Central Ambulance Service confirmed two patients are in critical condition and have been rushed to John Radcliffe Hospital’s Major Trauma Unit. Another 10 to 15 suffered minor injuries. The crash covers a 1km stretch with six vehicles heavily damaged.
Emergency crews including three ambulances, rapid response teams, police officers, and an air ambulance car have been at the scene since the first call at 8.22am.
The icy road conditions are being blamed for the multi-vehicle disaster that has left the A40 gridlocked and grief-stricken this morning.
