30 Years On: Moving Tribute to Fallen PC Philip Walters

A heartfelt memorial service honoured PC Philip Walters, the brave Met policeman shot dead on duty three decades ago. His sacrifice still echoes across London’s streets.

Tragic Day in Ilford

On 18 April 1994, just 28-year-old PC Walters was responding to a violent disturbance on Empress Avenue, Ilford. Together with PC Derek Shepherd, he confronted three men assaulting a resident. During the tense encounter, Walters was fatally shot in the chest, paying the ultimate price to protect his community.

Commander Bell Pays Moving Tribute

Speaking at the service, Commander Stuart Bell said:

“PC Philip Walters made the ultimate sacrifice for the community he served here in Redbridge 30 years ago.”

He added, “Each year, it is an honour for local officers to stand alongside Philip’s loved ones to remember his life and service. Behind the uniform was a brave young man – a son, a friend, and a colleague who gave everything for the safety of others.”

Short but Heroic Career

Walters joined the Metropolitan Police in September 1993 and was assigned to Ilford by February 1994. His dedication shone early, earning him the prestigious Baton of Honour at police training school for outstanding performance.

Commander Bell reflected, “Philip’s sacrifice is still felt today. The policing community across London stands in solidarity with his family, remembering the bravery he displayed.”

A Lasting Legacy Remembered

The memorial, close to the site where Walters fell, was packed with officers, family, friends, and former colleagues. Floral tributes were laid, heads bowed in silence, and vows renewed to uphold his legacy.

PC Philip Walters’ courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
