Inferno Hits Croydon Tower Block Basement
Six fire engines and 35 firefighters are battling a fierce blaze tearing through the basement of a Croydon tower block.
Fire Breaks Out at Iconic ‘50p Building’
The emergency call came just after 11pm on Sunday at No. 1 Croydon, the 24-storey tower also known as the former NLA Tower or the “Wedding Cake,” on Addiscombe Road near East Croydon station.
Designed by Richard Seifert & Partners and completed in 1970, the 269-foot-high building houses offices for well-known firms like Atkins, Directline Holidays, HotGen, dotdigital, Natterbox, and Global Resourcing.
Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation
Crews remain on scene, with road closures in place to aid firefighting efforts. The cause of the fire is not yet known and is being investigated.
