HMS Sultan in Gosport came alive as youngsters from across the UK battled it out in the Royal Navy University Training College’s Young Engineers Challenge – Operation Antarctica 2016.

Admiral Sir George Zambellas, head of the Royal Navy, hailed the day as a massive success, saying it was “a great day had by all.”
STEM Spotlight: Inspiring the Next Generation
The challenge, held in partnership with University Technical Colleges (UTCs), Young Engineers, BAE Systems, and Babcock, aims to boost young talent in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM).
- 40 teams went head-to-head.
- Some even spent a night onboard HMS Bristol for a sneak peek into naval life.
Operation Antarctica: A Cool Challenge
The competition’s theme centred on the Royal Navy’s disaster relief efforts. Teams had to design a boat capable of navigating treacherous ice flows and retrieving essential supplies from the Antarctic mission zone.
Timed perfectly for the eve of British Science Week (11-20 March), the event showcased how the Royal Navy, UTCs, Young Engineers, and industry giants like BAE Systems are rallying to lure young people into STEM careers.
