The heartbroken families of two men found dead in a crashed car more than a week after they disappeared have paid emotional tributes, saying their lives have been left “shattered beyond repair.” Stuart Tallis, 27, and William Hutchinson, 31, were discovered on 4 July inside a blue Peugeot 106 after the vehicle left the A584 Preston New Road, near the junction with the A583 Blackpool Road in Newton-with-Clifton, Lancashire. Police believe the car crashed at around 5.30am on 24 June – the same morning the pair were last seen alive.
Car hidden from sight for 10 days
Lancashire Police said the vehicle came to rest down an embankment where it was completely concealed by dense vegetation, making it invisible to passing motorists and search teams. The hidden location meant the car remained undiscovered for 10 days despite extensive searches across the area. Stuart was reported missing on 27 June, prompting a major police search. As enquiries progressed, officers established he may have been travelling with William, who had left Hull Street in Preston in his Peugeot shortly before the suspected collision. Specialist search teams combed roads, fields and waterways, but the vehicle’s position prevented it from being located until early July.
“More than a brother and son”
In a moving tribute, Stuart’s family described him as someone whose warmth touched everyone he met. They said:
“Stuart was more than a brother and son – he was our best friend.
“His smile, laughter and kind heart could light up any room.
“Our hearts are shattered. We will love you forever, Stu.”
“A heart of gold”
William’s family remembered him as a devoted father, loving partner and cherished son. They said:
“William was a much-loved son, devoted partner and proud father of two beautiful children.
“He was a lovable rogue with a larger-than-life personality and a heart of gold.
“He brought warmth and laughter everywhere he went. The void he leaves can never be filled.”
Police appeal continues
Lancashire Police described the deaths as “an extremely tragic incident” and said officers had hoped for “a far happier conclusion” to the search. Both families continue to receive support from specially trained officers. Detectives are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the A584 Preston New Road at around 5.30am on 24 June to come forward. Anyone who saw the blue Peugeot 106 or has information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact Lancashire Police.
