Engine Failure Sparks Mid-Flight Drama Over Sussex Coast
The single-engine Yakovlev Yak-52 took off from Henstridge Airfield, Somerset, at 11.43am, bound for the Netherlands on a delivery run. But just after crossing the Sussex coast, disaster struck.
Locals in Peacehaven reported hearing the plane “stuttering” as it passed overhead. Flight data showed a sharp U-turn above Newhaven and a rapid descent – signs of trouble in the sky.
Touchdown in Field Near Rottingdean Saves Pilot’s Life
The pilot managed a safe landing in a field by Falmer Road, Rottingdean, despite the engine cutting out completely. Danny Butler, an eyewitness, said the pilot was “shaken but absolutely fine,” calmly sitting on the wing, munching sandwiches and sipping coffee.

The plane’s owner, Jez Hopkinson, confirmed the sudden engine failure left the pilot no choice but to glide down onto the South Downs during what was supposed to be a routine ferry flight.
Emergency Services Respond Quickly; Investigation Underway
East Sussex Fire and Rescue arrived swiftly after the incident was reported at 12.31pm. A spokesperson confirmed crews secured the scene and the pilot was unharmed. Additional emergency units were stood down shortly after.
The aircraft remains stranded in the field as recovery teams prepare for removal. Authorities are launching a full investigation into the cause of the engine failure that nearly turned deadly.
