A British businessman has been named as one of three people killed when a light aircraft crashed in the Swiss Alps. Owain Davies, 55, from west Wales, was managing director of Carmarthenshire-based engineering company Amcanu. The Cirrus SR22T crashed on a mountainside near Leukerbad, in the Swiss canton of Valais, shortly after 4pm on Tuesday, September 15. The aircraft had departed Lugano and stopped at Sion Airport before taking off towards Buochs Airfield. Swiss authorities said the aircraft crashed around 10 minutes after leaving Sion. Emergency services, including helicopters and specialist rescue teams, were deployed to the mountainside, where all three people aboard the aircraft were found dead. Two of those killed were British nationals. The other victims have not been publicly identified. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Swiss authorities.
‘He was much more than our managing director’
Amcanu announced Mr Davies’ death “with the heaviest of hearts”, describing him as a familiar face on the factory floor, a mentor and friend to many of his colleagues. The company said: “Owain was our Managing Director, but to many of us he was much more than that. “He was a familiar face on the factory floor, an unstoppable force, a mentor and, for many people who have spent a significant part of their working lives at Amcanu… a very good friend.” Mr Davies was described as “determined, strong-willed, spirited, reflective and immensely proud”, but also as a deeply caring person who wanted the best for his family, employees, business and community. The company said its thoughts were with his wife Michelle, children Aron and Ffion, father Spencer, grandchildren Oakley and Albie and his wider family.
