More than 2,000 retail jobs are on the line after five major UK retailers plummeted into administration from January to early February 2026. Clearance sales are already raging, with store closures set to hit hard this spring.

High Street Bloodbath: Famous Brands Collapse Again

These struggling retailers employ anywhere between just over 100 to more than 1,000 staff each. Experts blame brutal trading conditions, soaring inflation, and rising labour costs for pushing these beloved brands to the edge.

  • Quiz Clothing: Crashed for the third time in six years after a dismal Christmas. Its 40 stores and 7 concessions remain open for clearance, but refunds have stopped and the website is offline. Around 109 jobs could vanish.
  • Claire’s Accessories: Now in its second administration since 2021. Some 150 stores and 1,000 staff face possible closure just months after a last-ditch rescue.
  • Game: Gaming giant tumbles into administration again – the second since 2012. Plans are underway to shut all standalone stores, signalling the death knell for high street gaming shops.

Biggest Blow: The Original Factory Shop Collapses

The harshest hit comes from The Original Factory Shop, which entered administration on 28 January putting over 1,000 jobs at risk. Administrators from Interpath Advisory blamed inflation, soaring labour costs, tough trading, and sinking consumer confidence.

LK Bennett to Close All Standalone Stores

Luxury fashion favourite of Princess Kate, LK Bennett, joined the collapse parade in February 2026. All standalone stores will shut after investment firm Gordon Brothers took over the brand but left physical shops out of the deal. Nine standalone shops and 13 concessions in department stores will close by April.

Retail Sector Faces Grim Future Amid Ongoing Struggles

The repeated failures of Quiz, Claire’s, and Game reveal deep-rooted problems beyond temporary market blips. Quiz’s third collapse since 2020 raises serious doubts about mid-market fashion’s future. Claire’s mounting troubles threaten a once-trusted accessory brand. Game’s fading high street presence marks the end of an era for youth culture staples.

Law firm Shakespeare Martineau reported over 1,600 UK business administrations in 2025 – a slight drop on 2024 but 22% higher than 2022, showing relentless pressure on British retailers.
