Gosport on Edge as Travellers Descend on Town Green
Gosport faces a costly headache after more than 30 travellers moved onto a large green space behind the DC Leisure Complex on Forest Way. The group arrived in style, driving over a footpath near a children’s playground to set up camp.
Caravans and Trucks Take Over Local Green
What started as a couple of vans has ballooned into a full-on convoy of caravans, tarmac trucks, a transit van, and energy installation wagons. The travellers even strung up a washing line close to the five-a-side football pitches, turning the peaceful area into a chaotic campsite.
Leisure complex staff appear to be turning a blind eye as the travellers make themselves at home.
Authorities Step In – But Costs Mount
Police arrived early this morning to confront the travellers and have issued notices to quit, pinned to a broken barrier lock. One Borough Council has already shelled out £2,000 in legal fees and braces for the cleanup costs once the travellers leave.
Residents Demand Tough Action
A letter from ‘concerned residents’ calls for “serious sanctions for such disrespectful behaviour.” One local told the council to get tougher, citing the mess left behind by the travellers.
“The police ordered the travellers to leave the site. We have issued a notice for the travellers to quit,” said a Gosport Borough Council spokeswoman. “We are aware of the fly-tipping at the site, and council officers have been sent to investigate.”
With tensions rising, Gosport waits to see who will foot the bill for this unwelcome takeover.
