Vandals Rip Down Inspirational South Downs Heritage Trail

The South Downs National Park Authority has slammed a sickening act of vandalism targeting a unique walking trail celebrating diverse cultural stories. Thirteen plaques featuring audio recordings by local writers of global heritage were ripped from the Sussex Heritage Coast trail between Seaford and Eastbourne.

Thirteen Plaques Stolen in Suspected Hate Crime

The plaques, part of the “We Hear You Now” trail launched in 2023, were prised off using a screwdriver. Shockingly, the screws were replaced to disguise the theft. The trail shares powerful stories connecting local writers to the beautiful South Downs landscape and has attracted thousands of visitors.

Since no other plaques were touched, officials believe this was a racially motivated attack. Sussex Police have been alerted and are treating the crime as a hate incident. They’re begging the public to come forward with any leads.

National Park Boss Condemns “Appalling” Attack

“This is deeply shocking and appalling,” said Tim Slaney, Interim Chief Executive of the National Park Authority. “We stand in full solidarity with the writers and will continue to celebrate the voices of all communities as we tackle the nature and climate crises.”

The plaques gave access to 13 moving audio stories celebrating the cultural heritage and voices of minority communities within the South Downs. The project received backing from Arts Council England to ensure diverse representation in the region’s cultural legacy.

Police Appeal for Info as Authorities Work to Restore Trail

Sergeant Tom Carter of Sussex Police’s Rural Crime Team said: “This theft is more than just a crime against property. These plaques are artistic expressions offering unique insights into the landscape.”

The National Park Authority is hustling to replace the plaques and urges visitors to listen to the stories online while the trail is being restored. Anyone with information should call Sussex Police on 101, quoting reference 47240172774.
