Southampton on Alert: Scammers Target Elderly with Fake £5,000 HMRC Calls
Southampton residents are urged to stay sharp after two elderly locals fell victim to dodgy scam calls demanding cash. On the morning of Thursday, June 2nd, a 73-year-old man received a terrifying call claiming he owed £5,000 to HM Revenue and Customs – or he’d face arrest.
The caller sounded convincing, even dropping personal details. But the man’s instincts kicked in, and he cut the call short.
Scam Strikes Twice in Southampton
The very next day, Friday, June 3rd, an elderly woman in Lordshill got a similar call. She quickly contacted the police and was warned not to hand over any money.
Police Community Support Officer David Warburton said:
“We’re issuing a warning in case more Southampton residents are targeted. Scammers often go after the vulnerable and elderly who might get confused. These calls demanding money are fake. Don’t give any details if you get such a call.”
How to Stay Safe from Phone Scams
- Never share personal or bank details over the phone.
- If you suspect you’ve given out sensitive info, contact your bank immediately to freeze your accounts or cancel cards.
- Tell elderly friends, family, and neighbours about these scams and advise caution.
- If you receive suspicious calls, report them to the police by calling 101.
If You’ve Handed Over Details
Don’t panic, but act fast. Call your bank to secure your accounts. Contact police on 101 to report the scam and get help.
Stay vigilant, Southampton. These fraudsters are cunning, but you can beat them by staying informed and cautious.
