British Tourist Battles for Life After Brutal Shark Attack in Tobago
A British holidaymaker is fighting for his life in intensive care after a terrifying bull shark attack off the coast of Tobago. The 64-year-old suffered serious wounds to his hand, thigh, and stomach at Turtle Beach in Great Courland Bay.
Shark Strikes Just 10 Metres From Shore
The attack happened in waist-deep water, only 10 metres from shore. Eyewitnesses say the shark was a massive bull shark, roughly 10 feet long and 2 feet wide. The tourist was suddenly grabbed and mauled in a violent encounter that shocked onlookers.
Authorities Shut Down Beaches Amid Shark Threat
In response, Trinidad and Tobago officials closed seven popular beaches, including Grafton and Buccoo Reef Marine Park, to protect locals and visitors. The Coast Guard and Department of Fisheries are hunting the shark to neutralise the danger.
“I saw a dorsal fin break the water and thought, ‘Oh my God, it’s a shark,’” recalled witness Stephanie Wright from West Sussex. “As it turned, I saw the tail come out as well. It swam off. At first, I thought it was a medical emergency but then I realised how serious it was.”
Shark Danger Looms Worldwide
The victim was rushed to hospital and is now in intensive care. Shark attacks remain a deadly risk worldwide, with last year’s stats showing 69 unprovoked attacks and 14 deaths globally.
Authorities urge beachgoers to stay alert and follow safety warnings in shark-prone waters.
