Bomb Scare in Gosport: Area Declared Safe After Ordnance Find
Eight WWII Devices Found During Kayaker Search
Police and Coastguard teams sealed off an area near Heritage Way in Gosport after discovering eight ordnance pieces. The haul, including World War II mortars and shells, was found on Saturday afternoon during a search for missing kayakers.
Search Triggered by Washing-Up Beach Items
The operation began when Coastguard rescue teams from Hillhead and Portsmouth spotted a torch and other items washed up on Stokes Bay beach. While scouring between Weevil Lane and Heritage Way just after 3pm, they came across the dangerous devices.
Area Cleared After EOD Experts’ Inspection
Bomb squad experts couldn’t inspect the ordnance until the tide receded at lunchtime the next day. On Sunday, December 11, at 1.30pm, the police cordon was lifted after EOD teams confirmed that these devices had previously been detonated safely on site. The area is now officially safe.
Royal Navy To Remove Ordnance Later
Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts are making arrangements to remove the devices from the site at a later date, ensuring no risk remains for local residents and beachgoers.
