Teenager Jailed for Defacing Windrush Mural with Nazi Symbols

A 17-year-old former RAF cadet from Port Talbot, Aristedes Miles Haynes, has been locked up for racially and homophobically aggravated vandalism — including scrawling Nazi symbols on a powerful Windrush mural.

Hate Crime Hits Port Talbot

The mural in Port Talbot merges the Welsh dragon with the Jamaican flag, honouring Donna Campbell, a nurse and daughter of the Windrush generation who tragically died during the pandemic alongside her mother Lydia. Haynes’ graffiti desecrated this poignant tribute.

Haynes pleaded guilty to three hate crime offences and five terrorism charges at the Old Bailey on June 7. The 18-year-old was sentenced to 19 months detention, followed by a year on extended licence and a three-year community behavioural order.

Accomplice Also Caught After Smoke Bomb Attack

Haynes wasn’t acting alone. A 15-year-old from Tonyrefail rolled a smoke bomb into The Queer Emporium, an LGBTQ+ business in Cardiff city centre, sparking another wave of hate crime.

The younger boy pleaded guilty to one criminal damage charge and four racially aggravated offences. Cardiff Youth Court sentenced him to a one-year referral order, a two-year criminal behaviour order, and ordered £100 in compensation to the business.

Police Uncover Online Hate Campaign

Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Williams of Counter Terrorism Policing Wales revealed the probe uncovered far more than just the physical attacks. The teens’ online activity showed the older boy was sharing extreme right-wing terror material.

“The offences shocked communities and the public alike,” said DCI Williams. “This sentencing ends the investigation and allows us to work with these young offenders to help turn their lives around.”

This case shines a light on the growing threat of hate crimes fueled by extremist online content.
