Deadly Distraction: Mobile Phone Use Behind Wheel Claims Four Lives on A34
The recent horror crash on the A34 has laid bare the deadly risks of using a mobile phone while driving. Four people were tragically killed after lorry driver Tomasz Kroker ignored warnings and fiddled with his phone behind the wheel last August.
Crackdown Launched Across Hampshire and Thames Valley
Despite the grim consequences, drivers are still flouting the law. Police in Hampshire and Thames Valley have launched a tough nationwide crackdown on motorists caught using mobile phones while driving. Roads Policing Officers from the Joint Operations Unit are stopping offenders, handing out fines, and educating the public on distracted driving dangers.
Distracted Driving Blamed for 15% of Fatal Crashes
Shockingly, 15% of fatal collisions in Hampshire involve drivers distracted or using their phones. Last May alone, 190 drivers were caught – a 36% rise on the previous year. Sergeant Rob Heard of Hampshire Constabulary’s Road Safety unit warns:
“You are four times more likely to crash if you use a mobile phone while driving. Far too many risk-taking drivers ignore this and the results are devastating, as we’ve seen on the A34.”
“The video showed the driver repeatedly glancing at his phone and the road ahead but never spotting the slowing, stationary traffic until it was too late.”
A Tragic Warning for All Road Users
The chilling consequences of distraction behind the wheel couldn’t be clearer. Police urge drivers to keep their phones out of sight and minds on the road – or risk tragic outcomes.
