A 63-year-old grandad was bludgeoned to death with a hammer in a savage row over unpaid cash. John Moore, 39, has now been locked up for the horrific killing of Francis Reilly in Essex.

Debt Dispute Turns Deadly Hammer Attack

Francis Reilly went to Moore’s flat on Ingrave Road to collect a debt. Moore, struggling with a drug habit, owed Reilly a large amount.

On September 12, Reilly arrived armed with a small bottle of ammonia. When he tried to spray Moore with the chemical, tempers flared and a violent fight broke out.

Moore, more than 20 years younger and stronger, grabbed a hammer and launched a brutal assault. He smashed Reilly repeatedly, slamming him against a wall.

Despite trying to escape, Reilly was chased down and bludgeoned outside the flat, witnessed by a stunned taxi driver.

Taxi Driver’s Quick Action Brings Police to Scene

The taxi driver hurried to flag down two officers as Moore continued the vicious beating. Reilly begged for mercy but was left gasping for breath, seriously hurt.

Police arrived in time to hear Reilly name Moore as his attacker. Paramedics rushed in, but Reilly tragically died at 4:25pm.

A post-mortem exposed horrific injuries: multiple hammer strikes to head, face, arms and chest, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung from being slammed into the wall.

Moore’s Self-Defence Claim Falls Apart

Moore admitted Reilly sprayed ammonia in his eyes and mouth but denied murder. Police found most ammonia spilled on the floor. A burns expert confirmed Moore’s injuries were minor and did not affect sight or breathing.

At Basildon Crown Court, the jury couldn’t agree on murder. Moore later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was jailed for six years and two months on October 13.

Family and Police Demand Justice for Francis Reilly

“Frankie was a loving father, brother, grandfather and uncle. He was greatly loved and will be sadly missed. We ask for privacy to grieve as a family.” – Reilly Family

“Moore’s brutal assault went far beyond any reasonable self-defence. He had full control and chose to unleash a vicious attack. Nobody deserves to die like this. It was right he faced justice.” – Detective Inspector Lisa Hurrell
