Killer’s Manslaughter Conviction Ends Long Court Battle
The brutal stabbing of 25-year-old Harrison Tomkins has finally been resolved in court. Jason Curtis was found guilty of manslaughter after a high-profile retrial that gripped the nation.
Early Morning Horror: Lifeguard Fatally Stabbed
Tomkins, a dedicated lifeguard, was knifed multiple times at flats on Arthur Road in Crawley just after 5am on 13 August 2023. Paramedics rushed to the scene but couldn’t save him. His family called the killing “senseless” and “catastrophic,” mourning their “kind and committed” loved one who worked in education, the prison service, and as a lifeguard.
Birthday Night Brawl Sparks Deadly Attack
The court revealed Curtis, 24, from London, and co-defendant Kaydon Prior, 25, from Crawley, had been partying for Curtis’s birthday in Chelsea. Trouble started when they discovered Prior’s ex-girlfriend out with Tomkins, leading to a fatal clash.
- CCTV tracked the men outside a local venue before heading to the Arthur Road flats.
- Prior briefly went home, then broke into the flat moments before the stabbing.
- Curtis was found hiding nearby; Prior was arrested at his home.
Sentences Delivered: Justice at Last
On 20 March at Lewes Crown Court, Curtis was sentenced to nine years for manslaughter. He was initially jailed for 22 years for murder but successfully appealed to have the charge reduced.
Prior, meanwhile, is serving 28 years for murder, weapon possession, and assault. The judge remarked Curtis showed little remorse despite having time to reflect.
Detective Constable Elliott Lander called the probe “long and arduous” and hopes the verdict brings some closure to Tomkins’ family. He also commended the police and court staff for their professionalism.
The case captured local attention, underscoring the tough fight to bring the killers to justice.
