Arsonist Jailed for Setting Birmingham Block Ablaze and Endangering Neighbours
A man who sparked a dangerous fire in his Birmingham flat and left neighbours at risk has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years behind bars for arson.
Candle Blaze Sparks Midnight Fire
William McDonalgh, 34, accidentally knocked over a candle in his Islington Row flat in the early hours of January 14 last year. The overturned candle ignited a fierce fire, but instead of alerting anyone, McDonalgh fled the scene.
He returned about 10 minutes later and saw the flames. He bravely tried to go back inside but was overcome by thick smoke and had to retreat.
Neighbours Hospitalised and Traumatised
Several tenants suffered smoke inhalation and required hospital treatment. Many are still dealing with the lasting trauma caused by the fire.
The blaze caused an estimated £500,000 worth of damage to the building.
Court Punishes Reckless Arsonist
McDonalgh later pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court. On January 27, he was handed a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
“This fire could easily have resulted in a loss of life and has traumatised the victims involved. It is only proper that the man who caused it and chose not to alert his flat mates has now been jailed for a number of years,” said DC Sonia Bahia of Bournville Lane CID.
