£75 Million Cocaine Haul Busted at Southampton Docks
The National Crime Agency (NCA) has struck a huge blow against drug smuggling, seizing nearly a tonne of cocaine worth an eye-watering £75 million. The stash was cleverly hidden inside banana crates arriving at Southampton Docks.
The shipment had travelled thousands of miles, shipping from Nicaragua and passing through Panama before reaching UK shores.
Two Men Arrested After Border Force Tip-Off
Border Force officers, working alongside the NCA, intercepted the container and uncovered 943kg of Class A drugs concealed among pallets of bananas. Last night, two men were arrested and charged with importing Class A substances:
- Daniel Dumitru, 37, from Smethwick, West Midlands
- Andrew Smyth, 46, from Prenton, Merseyside
Both men are due to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday, 19 March).
NCA Warns of Community Damage from Drugs
NCA Branch Commander Saju Sasikumar said: “This is a massive amount of cocaine which was destined for the streets of the UK. The supply of Class A drugs badly damages society by bringing violence and addiction to our communities. Seizing these drugs deprives the crime group behind the importation of huge profits that cannot be ploughed back into further offending.”
This massive bust shines a spotlight on the ongoing battle against drug trafficking through UK ports, with authorities determined to shield communities from the devastating impact of drug crime.
