HRH Earl of Wessex Champions Duke of Edinburgh’s Award on Isle of Wight
The Earl of Wessex dropped in on Hovertravel, the world’s only passenger hovercraft service, to see how the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is changing lives on the Isle of Wight.
Diamond Anniversary Spotlight
This year marks 60 years since the DofE launched in 1956, transforming millions of young people across the UK and beyond. Using Hovertravel’s boardroom, the Earl met with headteachers from Isle of Wight and Portsmouth schools, tackling key issues like youth access to local activities, isolation, and deprivation.
Building Skills for Life
The DofE Award offers 14 to 24-year-olds a chance to boost confidence and develop vital life and employability skills. Participants set their own challenges, learn practical skills, and prepare for the adult world ahead.
“We are strong supporters of the DofE for the local community and we welcome visits from young people as they complete their challenges,” said Neil Chapman, managing director of Hovertravel. “Hosting the Earl during the Diamond Anniversary is a special privilege. We hope this visit raises awareness of DofE’s brilliant work across the Island.”
As both a Trustee and Gold Award holder, the Earl has long been a passionate advocate for the DofE.
A Nationwide Celebration
During the Diamond Anniversary tour, the Earl is visiting regions across the UK to celebrate the hard work of DofE volunteers and the success stories of young participants.
Peter Westgarth, Regional Director and CEO of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, said: “The DofE is woven into Isle of Wight life and has played a key role in hundreds of young people’s development. Huge thanks to the volunteers who ensure every participant gets the most from this fantastic opportunity.”
Diamond Challenge for All Ages
While the traditional award is for 14 to 24-year-olds, this Diamond Anniversary year has launched the DofE Diamond Challenge. This one-off initiative invites people of all ages to set and smash personal goals – whether an adventure, skill, or something personal.
