Brighton Scraps Benches to Fight Rising Antisocial Behaviour
Brighton bosses have started yanking benches from New Road this week to tackle a surge in antisocial behaviour at the city centre hotspot.
Council Cracks Down to Boost Safety and Accessibility
Brighton and Hove City Council confirmed the bench removal is just the start of bigger plans to make New Road safer, cleaner, and more accessible for visitors.
Once celebrated as the UK’s first shared space for pedestrians and vehicles back in 2007, New Road now faces a darker reputation for antisocial antics.
Big Plans for a Safer, Friendlier New Road
The council is teaming up with Sussex Police, local businesses, and community groups to cook up long-term solutions that will transform New Road into a welcoming and secure public space.
“We are committed to making New Road a safer and more inviting place for everyone, and this is the first step in wider improvements planned for the area,” said a Brighton and Hove City Council spokesperson.
