Blaze Breaks Out in 12th Floor Flat of Redbridge Tower Block
A fierce fire erupted on the 12th floor of a 19-storey tower block on Cuckmere Lane in Redbridge just after 5pm on Sunday. Flames tore through a flat’s kitchen, sending thick smoke billowing through the corridors and sparking panic among residents.
Massive Emergency Response Launched
Hampshire Fire and Rescue scrambled 50 firefighters from across the city, alongside 10 fire crews, seven ambulances, and 20 police officers. Ten pumps and an aerial ladder platform were also deployed to tackle the inferno. Neighbours raised the alarm after smoke filled the 12th and 13th floors.
“I was led through thick, acrid smoke to escape. The windows were blowing out as fire crews arrived,” one shaken resident revealed.
Major Incident Declared – No Serious Injuries
The fire was swiftly brought under control, contained within a single flat which was gutted by flames. Hampshire Fire and Rescue confirmed everyone involved escaped unharmed, though some suffered minor smoke inhalation.
Police cordoned off the area and closed nearby roads to keep residents safe and allow emergency services easy access. Fire crews, supported by Hampshire Police and the South Central Ambulance Hazard Area Response team, continue to assist those affected.
Investigation Underway and Support Offered
- Police and fire services have launched a joint probe to establish the fire’s cause, with suspicions that a candle may have sparked the blaze.
- Accommodation and refuge are being arranged for displaced residents.
- Safety advice is being provided to the tower block community.
The fire breaks just days after the anniversary of the tragic Shirley Towers fire, where two firefighters lost their lives. Authorities remain vigilant as they work to support those impacted by Sunday’s dramatic blaze.
