Man Arrested for Murder of Croydon Custody Sergeant Matt Ratana

Tragic Shooting at Croydon Custody Centre

Police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the murder of Sergeant Matt Ratana. The officer was shot at around 2.15am on Friday, 25 September at Croydon Custody Centre on Windmill Lane.

Despite efforts from officers and paramedics at the scene, Sergeant Ratana was rushed to hospital but sadly died.

Suspect Taken to Hospital After Shooting

The suspect, initially arrested for an unrelated offence, was also found with a gunshot wound and taken to hospital by ambulance. Importantly, no police firearms were fired during the incident.

The man’s condition, once critical, has now stabilised and is no longer life-threatening.

Official Arrest Made After Medical Clearance

On Friday 13 November, he was deemed fit to be arrested on suspicion of murder. However, officers will work closely with medical and legal teams to decide when he can be formally interviewed.

Family Support in Place

Specialist family liaison officers from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command have been supporting Sergeant Ratana’s partner, son, and family. They have been informed of the arrest and continue to provide assistance.
