A Transavia flight from Paris to Lisbon was forced to make an emergency landing last week after an Apple iPad overheated and began emitting smoke mid-flight, triggering fears of an onboard fire.
Flight TO7646, operated by a Boeing 737-800, departed Paris Orly Airport at 3.44pm on April 10. However, approximately midway through the journey, the crew made the decision to divert to Porto (OPO) as smoke from the electronic device began to spread within the cabin.
Emergency Protocols Activated
According to reports, the overheating iPad raised immediate safety concerns, prompting the crew to initiate emergency procedures. The aircraft descended and landed safely in Porto, where it was met on the tarmac by emergency services.
There were no injuries reported among the passengers or crew, and the source of the smoke was quickly secured upon landing.
Passengers Re-Accommodated
Following the unscheduled stop, passengers were safely disembarked in Porto and later re-accommodated on alternative flights to complete their journey to Lisbon.
Transavia has not released an official statement on the incident, but aviation safety experts have noted that lithium-ion battery failures in personal devices, while rare, can pose serious in-flight fire hazards.
Aviation Safety Reminder
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of following airline safety instructions regarding the use and storage of electronic devices during flight. Passengers are advised to report any overheating, swelling, or unusual behaviour of devices to cabin crew immediately.
The aircraft was inspected before returning to service, and no further mechanical issues were reported.
