HMS Victory isn’t just any ship — it’s the oldest commissioned warship in the world and the flagship of First Sea Lord, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins. On October 21st, the Royal Navy held a stirring ceremony onboard to mark the 220th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

The Day That Changed Naval History

Trafalgar Day is the flagship event aboard HMS Victory. This year’s ceremony honoured the 1805 battle that secured Britain’s naval supremacy for a century. The day began with the traditional “Colours” ceremony — raising the White Ensign and Union Jack — followed by the iconic signal: “England expects that every man will do his duty.”

Honouring Nelson’s Legendary Legacy

Admiral Nelson’s bold tactic of breaking the enemy line clinched victory, but he paid the ultimate price just an hour into the fierce battle. Struck by a French sharpshooter’s musket ball while commanding from Victory’s quarterdeck, Nelson fell at the spot now marked by a polished brass plaque — the solemn heart of the ceremony.

Royal Navy’s Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Paul Beattie, laid a wreath here. The Reverend Doctor Mark Davidson, Chaplain of the Fleet, led the moving service.

New Commanding Officer’s First Trafalgar Day

This year’s ceremony was extra special for Lieutenant Commander Steve Cass, HMS Victory’s 102nd Commanding Officer, attending his first Trafalgar Day. Cass said:

“It has been a personal honour to take part in the traditional ceremony, to read Lord Collingwood’s words after the battle, and lay a wreath on behalf of the ship’s company at the spot where Lord Nelson sadly died from his wounds. His command, leadership, and the core values of those who fought 220 years ago remain a source of pride and inspiration.”

“As we pay respects to the nation’s greatest naval hero, we also remember all personnel serving today.”
