Just before 9am on Saturday, police were called to Millmead Lock on the River Wey in Guildford after a woman’s body was spotted floating in the water.

The deceased has not yet been formally identified, but police have informed her family and the coroner as part of the ongoing investigation.

The death is being treated as unexplained, with officers currently not suspecting any third-party involvement.

Police have issued an urgent appeal for witnesses who were in the area between 8am and 9am on Saturday morning. They are particularly keen to speak to a woman in her 50s who was reportedly sitting on a bench eating a picnic near Millmead Lock. This woman left the scene heading towards Debenhams through the car park shortly before police arrived.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference 45180075013. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
