A woman in her 20s has died after a car collided with a stationary street cleaning vehicle in Epsom, with a man arrested on suspicion of multiple driving offences. Emergency services were called to Christ Church Road shortly before 11.40pm on Wednesday, August 5, following reports of a serious collision. Surrey Police said the crash involved a black Smart car and a stationary street cleaning vehicle. Despite the efforts of emergency services, a woman in her 20s who was travelling as a passenger in the Smart car was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed.

Man arrested following fatal Epsom crash

The driver of the Smart car, a man also aged in his 20s, was arrested following the collision. Police said he was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, driving while over the prescribed limit, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and causing death by driving while uninsured. He was taken to hospital for medical treatment. Christ Church Road was closed for several hours overnight while collision investigators examined the scene and carried out initial enquiries. The road reopened shortly after 9.45am.

Police appeal for CCTV and dashcam footage

Surrey Police are now appealing for witnesses and footage as detectives investigate the circumstances leading up to the fatal collision. Officers particularly want to establish how the black Smart car was being driven immediately before the crash. A Surrey Police spokesperson said: “We are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Epsom. “Officers were called to Christ Church Road just before 11.40pm on Wednesday, 5 August following a report of a collision at the location involving a black Smart car and a stationary street cleaning vehicle. “Sadly the passenger of the Smart car, a woman in her 20s, died at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed.” Police are asking anyone who was in the Christ Church Road area between 11.35pm and 11.40pm on Wednesday, August 5, to come forward. Anyone with CCTV, dashcam or helmet-camera footage which may have captured the collision or the Smart car in the moments beforehand is also being urged to contact police. Information can be provided to Surrey Police quoting reference PR/45260094788. The investigation remains ongoing.
