Car Crashes Into Traffic Lights in Portsmouth, Narrowly Missing Shop

Chaos hit Kingston Road, Portsmouth, just after 2pm today when a car smashed into a set of traffic lights — missing a convenience store by inches. A woman driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries, while the baby in the car escaped unscathed.

Scenes of Panic Near Tony’s Food Store

The driver’s VW Touran ended up wedged between barriers and the shop front. Tony’s food store owner, who was upstairs at the time, described the moment. He said, “I heard a loud bang and thought scaffolding had fallen. It sounded like a bomb going off. One of the workers came upstairs saying a customer had nearly been hit by a car crashing through the barriers. It was all very scary. I’m just glad everyone is okay.”

Emergency Crews Control Traffic and Clear the Scene

Police have cordoned off one lane on Kingston Road and are directing traffic at the New Road junction. Firefighters from Southsea worked quickly to secure the area. They removed a section of the barrier to free the car for recovery.

Specialist Recovery Team Winches Away Damaged Vehicle

Experts from Boarhunt Garage winched the damaged VW onto a recovery unit. Traffic around the crash site is now slowly returning to normal.
