Just after 11pm on 18 August 2024, PCs Nathan Maudsley and Kieran Ashworth rushed to the scene of a knife attack in Gorton. Upon arrival, they encountered chaos with multiple victims, a suspect still present, and one man suffering from severe bleeding caused by multiple stab wounds.
With no ambulance on site and equipped only with basic gear, the officers immediately took action. They detained the suspect and then focused on stopping the victim’s bleeding. For several critical minutes, they managed the situation, comforted the seriously injured man, and coordinated emergency services through their radio communication.
Greater Manchester Police have credited PC Maudsley and PC Ashworth with directly saving the man’s life. In recognition of their bravery, both officers were awarded Chief Constable Commendations in March 2026.
Reflecting on the incident, the officers said, “It was very much a team effort. Teamwork was absolutely vital.” Their response showed no bravado or hesitation—just two officers performing essential, difficult work and ensuring the victim returned safely to his family.
This incident exemplifies response policing at its finest. Well done, PCs Maudsley and Ashworth. Truly brilliant.
