Tragedy struck on the River Thames as the body of a missing girl was recovered near Gravesend, Kent Police confirmed today.
The discovery followed a major search after two children entered the river near Royal Pier Road at around 1:46pm on Friday, 30 May. Emergency crews from various agencies quickly responded to the scene.
A young boy was rescued from the water and is currently stable in hospital. Unfortunately, the girl remained missing overnight despite extensive efforts.
Search operations resumed early on Saturday, with Kent Police’s Marine Unit, H.M. Coastguard, and the RNLI collaborating in the efforts. At approximately 11:40am, the girl’s body was recovered from the water near Gravesend with assistance from the RNLI.
Kent Police have confirmed that the girl’s next of kin have been informed and formal identification has been completed. Authorities have stated that the death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
The Port of London Authority, H.M. Coastguard, South East Coast Ambulance Service, and RNLI crews were praised for their swift and coordinated response in locating the children after the incident.
A police spokesperson said, “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the young girl at this incredibly difficult time. We would like to thank all those who assisted in the extensive search.”
