Whooping Cough Cases Skyrocket by 230% Across the UK

The UK is grappling with a sharp spike in Whooping cough cases, also known as the dreaded ‘100-day cough’. New data reveals a staggering 230% rise compared to last year, with 716 confirmed cases reported between July and November 2023. That’s triple the figures for the same period in 2022, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

What is Whooping Cough?

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious bacterial infection attacking the lungs and breathing tubes. It’s particularly dangerous for babies and young children. The NHS warns that neither vaccination nor previous infection guarantees lifetime immunity, making repeated shots crucial.

Spot the Symptoms Before It’s Too Late

The illness kicks off like a common cold – runny nose and sore throat without a high fever. But soon it escalates into persistent coughing fits, often worse at night. The tell-tale “whoop” sound during coughs, breathlessness, and vomiting after coughing are classic signs. Babies may turn grey or blue during episodes, while adults often suffer red-faced, intense coughing bursts.

NHS Urges Caution and Swift Action

If you notice symptoms in a baby under six months, or severe, worsening cough in anyone, seek medical help immediately. Pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems should be extra careful, especially if exposed to an infected person.

  • Don’t rush to the GP surgery – call first.
  • Phone consultations may be used to avoid spreading infection.
  • Keep up with vaccination schedules to protect yourself and your family.

Health Authorities on High Alert

UK health officials are closely monitoring the outbreak and urging the public to stay vigilant. The recent surge highlights the urgent need for awareness and vaccination to curb this worrying trend.
