A massive fire has erupted near the Old Park Hotel in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, prompting a significant emergency response this afternoon.
The fire service was alerted after a local sailor spotted thick smoke and flames in the St Lawrence area. Fire crews from Shanklin were the first to arrive on the scene to investigate the blaze.
Currently, six fire pumps have been deployed from Newport, Ryde, Shanklin, and East Cowes. Approximately 60 firefighters and officers are actively working to control the fire. Two water carriers and 15 lengths of hose are being used to manage the spreading flames.
The fire has ignited undergrowth within a wooded area roughly 50 metres square and is rapidly spreading uphill, creating a challenging situation for the crews.
Access to the fire is difficult due to the remote location and damaged roads around Undercliffe Drive. To assist with the response, fire chiefs have called in the National Air Support from Bournemouth to help pinpoint the fire and accelerate firefighting efforts.
Guests at the Old Park Hotel have been advised to remain indoors for their safety while firefighters continue to battle the extensive blaze.
