A tragic incident occurred in south east London when 14-year-old Eghosa Ogbebor was shot dead while filming a music video with friends. The young teenager “never came home,” leaving his family devastated.
Eghosa was fatally shot on Lord Warwick Street, Woolwich, at around 3:40 pm last Thursday, marking the beginning of a violent Easter Bank Holiday across London.
During the same weekend, four men were arrested following a stabbing of a 26-year-old man outside a Peckham nightclub early Monday. Additionally, two men in their 20s remain hospitalised with life-threatening injuries, and a 19-year-old stabbed in Harrow on Friday remains in critical care.
At the family home in Abbey Wood, Eghosa’s aunt told Metro, “He was so fun, playful and full of life. He loved his family and had so many friends. He was very popular. He loved music, was so talented, and lived for it. On the day he was shot, he went out to film a video with his friends. He never came back. His mother is broken. He was so young, just a boy with his whole life ahead of him.”
Police have made several arrests in connection with the shooting. A 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were arrested on Saturday on suspicion of murder. Two boys aged 14 and 16, along with an 18-year-old man, who were arrested on Friday, have been released on bail. A 46-year-old man is also in custody for assisting an offender.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Eghosa’s family is being supported by specialist officers during this difficult time.
Local witnesses recalled the terror of the shooting. Sofia Pereira, 33, who was working nearby at The Greyhound pub, said she heard a loud bang and a bin falling before panic broke out. “It was a lovely day and then obviously everyone got scared because they heard the shooting. People on the patio ran inside, panicking, shouting ‘lock all the doors.’”
Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card said, “Dedicated detectives continue inquiries into Eghosa’s tragic death. We acknowledge local concerns and the increased police presence. Anyone with information is urged to come forward. Our thoughts remain with Eghosa’s family during this devastating time.”
London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan added, “My thoughts are with the family and community following this appalling shooting. There is absolutely no place for this violence. The Met are working around the clock with arrests made and investigations ongoing. Residents will notice increased police presence.”
