Helicopter Crashes Minutes After Taking Off from Sandown Airport
A Robinson R44 helicopter has crash-landed on the Isle of Wight shortly after take-off this morning. The chopper had departed from Sandown Airport but came down near Shanklin Road, between Shanklin and Whiteley Bank, at around 09:30.
Crash Happens Just Seven Minutes Into Flight
The private flight lasted only about seven minutes before disaster struck. The exact reason for the crash is still unknown, leaving locals and officials shocked.
Massive Emergency Response at Scene
A huge operation is underway to deal with the aftermath. Emergency services at the scene include:
- Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance
- Coastguard Rescue 175 from Lee-on-Solent
- Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, deploying four ambulances, an operational commander, and a rapid response paramedic
- Fire crews from Shanklin, Ventnor, and Newport
Police have closed Shanklin Road between Whiteley Bank and Apse Manor Road while emergency teams work.

The number of people on board and their injuries have not yet been confirmed. Rescue teams are still at the crash site, and injured victims may be airlifted to hospitals on the mainland if needed.
