A massive grass fire erupted on Rammey Marsh on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a significant response from the London Fire Brigade (LFB). Approximately ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were deployed to combat the rapidly spreading flames amid soaring heatwave conditions.
The fire started at around 3pm and quickly spread across the tinder-dry grassland. Thick smoke was visible over the M25 motorway between junctions 25 and 26, leading to warnings for motorists travelling through the busy route.
To assist in managing the blaze, the LFB deployed a drone team to assess the fire’s extent and guide crews through the challenging terrain. This technology helped focus firefighting efforts to bring the fire under control effectively.
An LFB spokesperson commented, “This summer has seen an unprecedented long dry spell with high temperatures, so the grass in London is tinder-box dry and the smallest of sparks can start a blaze which could cause devastation.”
The spokesperson also highlighted ongoing concerns about careless behaviour, stating, “Despite repeated warnings, people are still firing up barbecues in parks, flicking cigarettes from cars, and leaving rubbish to pile up in dry areas. These careless acts risk sparking more devastating fires during this extreme weather.”
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with the Rammey Marsh fire.
Authorities have issued a strong appeal to the public to take precautions during the continuing heatwave. They advise avoiding the use of barbecues in open green spaces and on balconies, disposing of cigarettes responsibly without flicking them from vehicles, and ensuring all rubbish is taken home or placed in designated bins.
With UK temperatures expected to reach 28°C and dry conditions persisting, the risk of wildfires remains elevated. Fire crews remain on red alert, urging everyone to stay cautious to prevent potentially devastating consequences.
