Derelict Ocean Hotel in Sandown Ablaze Again – Second Fire in Four Days!
Firefighters Race to Tackle Latest Blaze
Fire crews scrambled to the derelict Ocean Hotel in Sandown this evening after smoke billowed from a top-floor window around 8pm. The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service deployed three fire engines from Sandown, Shanklin, and Ryde to the scene on the High Street and Esplanade.
Using a 13.5m ladder, firefighters gained access to the upper floors of the abandoned building. A brave crew member equipped with breathing apparatus carried a hose reel jet up to tackle the flames head-on.
Fire Under Control but Precautions in Place
Thanks to thermal imaging technology, fire chiefs confirmed the blaze was contained to just one room—preventing further spread. Despite this, High Street remains closed to all traffic as a safety measure, with cordons around the York Road junction. The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has a commander on site, though no injuries have been reported.
Suspicious Fires Spark Police Arson Probe
This marks the second suspicious fire at the Ocean Hotel in just four days, following a similar blaze on Monday. Police have now launched a full arson investigation.
“Given the recent history of incidents at this location, we are treating this fire as suspicious and have launched an arson investigation. We are working closely with the fire service to gather evidence and identify those responsible,” a police spokesperson said.
Local Worries Grow Over Safety and Security
Once a popular seaside spot, the Ocean Hotel has stood abandoned for some time, making it vulnerable to vandalism and arson. The repeat fires have alarmed residents and authorities alike.
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses can report details directly or anonymously via Crimestoppers.
