A harrowing rescue went sideways when a Good Samaritan plunged into a frozen lake trying to save a man who had fallen through the ice while rescuing a dog. The icy drama unfolded on Sunday afternoon at Connaught Water, Epping Forest, Essex.
Man and Hero Both Sink in Frozen Lake Clash
The chaos began when a man ran onto thin ice to save a dog stranded on the frozen water. The ice gave way beneath him, plunging him into the freezing lake.
Not wasting a second, a passer-by braved the fragile ice to help – only to fall in too. Both men battled the icy waters before managing to scramble to safety, all caught on film by a shocked witness.
“It’s problematic for dog walkers – it wasn’t just this man; other people’s dogs also went onto the ice. This could happen again,” said eyewitness Ozgur Ontas.
Paramedics Respond as Dog Comes Home Safe
Emergency crews from the East of England Ambulance Service treated both men at the scene. One was rushed to Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone for urgent care.
The frightened dog was quickly reunited with its owners, miraculously unharmed.
Essex Fire and Rescue slammed the risky rescue attempt, urging the public to stay off frozen waters and dial 999 instead.
Watch Manager Gary Dyer warned: “Cold water can overwhelm the body very quickly. The safest thing to do is stay out of the water and call us – we have the training and equipment to respond safely.”
Storm Goretti Blasts Britain with Snow and Gales
This chilling drama comes as Storm Goretti roars through England and Wales, dumping heavy snow, rain, and ferocious 70mph gales, especially along Devon and Cornwall’s coasts.
The Met Office has issued yellow warnings covering South West England, the Midlands, and Wales, forecasting up to 8 inches (20cm) of snow on high ground.
Hundreds of schools remain closed nationwide, while trains and flights are cancelled following the coldest winter night yet, where temperatures plummeted to a biting -12.5C in Norfolk.
