A brand-new bus service is set to transform travel in Sussex from next year. Launching on 9 May 2026, Route 500 will provide a direct, 24/7 bus connection between Eastbourne and Gatwick Airport, with stops at important towns along the route.
Direct Route Through Sussex Towns
Route 500 will operate around the clock, with buses running every hour. The service will link Eastbourne to Gatwick Airport via Willingdon, Hailsham, East Hoathly, Halland, Uckfield, Maresfield, Forest Row, East Grinstead, Copthorne, and the Manor Royal Business District. This new route replaces the existing routes 54 (Eastbourne to Uckfield) and 261 (Uckfield to East Grinstead), offering a faster and more straightforward connection, particularly between East Grinstead and Gatwick Airport.
Cheap Fares and Major Benefits
The adult fare for Route 500 will be capped at just £3, and concessionary passes will be accepted at all times. The service will run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing a reliable travel option for all users.
Nick Hill, Commercial Director at Metrobus, described the new route as a “major step forward” for connectivity in Sussex. He highlighted that the service offers an affordable and dependable option for workers, residents, and travellers, improving access to jobs, education, and the airport.
“This is a huge boost for Sussex, delivering a bus service passengers can rely on anytime,” said Nick Hill.
Gatwick Backs New 24/7 Service
Jonathan Pollard, Chief Commercial Officer at London Gatwick, welcomed the introduction of Route 500 as the airport’s eighth 24-hour bus connection. He noted that the service supports sustainable travel and enhances links across East and West Sussex.
“We are delighted to partner on this. It makes life easier for airport staff and passengers travelling across the region,” said Jonathan Pollard.
