A neo-Nazi extremist from Essex, Alfie Coleman, aged 22, has been sentenced to 13-and-a-half years in prison for planning a mass shooting while working at a Tesco store.
Coleman, who is originally from Great Notley, was caught in an MI5 sting operation after attempting to purchase a Makarov semi-automatic pistol, magazines, and ammunition. His plans targeted both customers and colleagues at the store.
Investigations revealed that Coleman had created a “kill list” naming staff and shoppers he referred to as “race traitors” because of their partners’ ethnic backgrounds. The list also included vehicle details and descriptions, highlighting his disturbing right-wing extremist views.
For several months, Coleman communicated with undercover MI5 agents via encrypted messaging apps, trying to buy weapons for a mass shooting, with possible targets including mosques. He was arrested by police in a Morrisons car park in Stratford on September 29, 2023, where he was found in possession of a deactivated pistol.
During sentencing, Judge Richard Marks KC described Coleman’s views as “virulently racist” and labelled him a “dangerous offender.” Coleman claimed that his extreme views were only fantasies without real intent to carry out an attack, but the court dismissed this defence.
Coleman pleaded guilty to attempting to possess a prohibited firearm and ammunition, as well as multiple counts of possessing material useful for terrorism. Following a retrial, he was found guilty of preparing acts of terrorism and was sentenced to 13-and-a-half years in prison, including an extended licence period.
