Nearly one million drivers using the Dartford Crossing are facing fines after failing to update their Dart Charge accounts, causing widespread concern among motorists about the management of their toll payments.
In July 2023, National Highways switched the service provider for the Dart Charge toll system on the QEII bridge. Drivers were instructed to update their account details immediately to continue automatic payments. However, out of 1.7 million account holders, only around 770,000 complied with the update requirements. This leaves hundreds of thousands of drivers at risk of penalties for non-payment.
Most users rely on automatic payments to cover the £2.50 crossing fee. Despite this, many have received fines after their accounts were unexpectedly closed without warning. Some motorists have even reported bailiffs visiting their homes over missed payments they believed were being handled automatically.
National Highways has stated that all users were contacted in advance about the need to update their accounts. A spokesperson explained that accounts with invalid or inactive payment details were closed after multiple reminders were sent. Nevertheless, infrequent users remain frustrated and are calling for improved communication to prevent unnecessary fines.
With approximately 4.5 million crossings each month between Essex and Kent, the Dart Charge system plays a crucial role in keeping thousands of daily commuters moving smoothly. National Highways acknowledges the importance of ensuring the system operates effectively to avoid unfair penalties for drivers.
