A 38-year-old man with previous rape convictions has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 33 years for the sexual murder of 21-year-old Courtney Angus in West Yorkshire. Michael Moore, also known as Michael Doherty, admitted to killing Courtney during a police raid at an Asda supermarket in Dewsbury following a violent spree.
Courtney Angus’s body was found at Moore’s home in Batley in July last year. The case shocked the local community and led to a significant police investigation.
Shock Confession At Asda Raid
Moore was arrested after officers encountered him in Dewsbury town centre, where he was brandishing a knife. He warned police to bring an armed response, stating, “I’ve got murder, I’ve got a dead body in my house.” This confession came during a raid triggered by Moore’s violent threats and thefts in local shops.
Disturbing Evidence Revealed
Prosecutors explained that Courtney had been staying with Moore for several days before her death. On the day she was killed, Moore expressed romantic feelings towards her and threatened suicide when she rejected him. The murder involved sexual and sadistic acts. Moore also took graphic photographs of Courtney’s battered body, including a selfie beside her corpse.

“Since the murder of my daughter, my life is not the same,” said Courtney’s mother, Diane Angus. “The grief is always there, a pain that changes shape but never fades. I wish I could hold her again. There is a constant ache missing who she was and the future we were meant to share.”

Michael Moore pleaded guilty to the murder of Courtney Angus, theft, and three counts of threatening with a bladed article. His criminal record includes convictions for rape, arson, assault, robbery, and harassment.
Sentenced at Leeds Crown Court, Moore faces a minimum of 33 years in prison for the sexual murder committed in Batley.
