A massive fire has erupted at L and S Waste Management on Portsdown Hill, located on the outskirts of Portsmouth, this Friday evening. The blaze quickly spread, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky.
The smoke is so dense that it can be seen from the Isle of Wight and is affecting areas including Fareham and Portchester.
Firefighters from across Hampshire, including crews from Cosham, Havant, Southsea, and Hayling Island, have rushed to the scene to battle the flames. Hampshire Fire and Rescue confirmed that the emergency call was received at 6.50pm, and crews expect to remain on site throughout the night. A spokeswoman described the fire as “well developed” and noted its rapid spread.
While the M27 motorway remains open, the thick smoke is causing significant concern for drivers in the area. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Hampshire Constabulary officers are also present, working alongside fire crews to ensure public safety.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to keep windows and doors firmly closed to avoid inhaling the hazardous smoke. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at this time.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue stated that once the fire is under control, a full investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the blaze.
